Gamasutra: I hear that Dwarf Fortress is coming to Steam and itch.io in a paid version with an easier interface. I heard the reason was concern over possible future medical costs. Of all the changes Dwarf Fortress has undergone, this is likely the most surprising. Here are a few screenshots compared with the old ASCII graphics: gallery ids='178,1796818. Steam is the result of boiling water. This is distinct from mist, a similar looking product of water falling, or smoke. Rain falling on a pool of magma may cause steam, as will magma boiling off water that is covering something that is magma safe (like an obsidian stone). Magma is the most common source of the temperatures needed to boil water, but some burning items may create steam when submerged, as may some creatures with very high body temperature.
Steam is visibly harmless in the current version. Forgotten beasts are sometimes generated to be composed of steam, and these creatures are far from harmless, though they are exceedingly fragile due to the material properties of steam.
Another product of water and magma mixing is obsidian.
It has been reported that steam can be produced from rain falling on the blood of a forgotten beast who possessed the fire breathing ability.
To generate a continuous steam generator, build a magma-safe bridge over a magma flow. Connect a space containing the bridge to an ample reservoir of magma, and allow water to fall on it from above. This will produce a continuous cloud of steam that spreads throughout surrounding squares.

It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.

Nothing substantial is new or changed, under the hood. It’s still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music by default. A few bells and whistles won’t change that.
You may already be familiar with the tile set mod packs from Michał “Mayday” Madej and Patrick Martin “Meph” Schroeder. They’re collaborating on an all-new, from-scratch tileset, as seen in the trailer and screenshots.
